Bolivian Coup Attempt Subdued, President Arce Reasserts Authority

General Arrested, Armed Forces Withdraw

Breaking News

LA PAZ, Bolivia - An apparent coup attempt in Bolivia has been quelled, with President Luis Arce reestablishing control over the military. The Bolivian armed forces pulled back from the presidential palace on Wednesday evening, and General Freddy Machicado was arrested.

The coup attempt began on Wednesday afternoon, when a group of military officers loyal to former President Jeanine Áñez seized the presidential palace. Áñez was overthrown in 2020 after widespread protests over her disputed election. Arce, a member of the Movement for Socialism party, was elected president in October 2020.

The international community quickly condemned the coup attempt, and the United States called for the restoration of democratic order. President Arce met with military leaders on Wednesday evening, and it was agreed that the armed forces would withdraw from the palace and Machicado would be arrested.

The situation in Bolivia remains tense, but Arce's reassertion of authority is a significant step towards restoring stability. The arrest of Machicado and the withdrawal of the military from the presidential palace are indications that the coup attempt has been defeated.
