Constitution outlines process for incapacitated or deceased president
Article 131 of the Iranian constitution states:
If the President becomes incapacitated or dies in office, the First Vice President shall assume the presidency for a period of three months. During this period, the Cabinet shall continue to function and shall be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the country.
Within three months, the Guardian Council shall convene an election to choose a new president. The new president shall serve for the remainder of the original president's term.
